      Robot Vacuum Specs Explained: What Actually Matters and What's Just a Big Number

      Robot vacuum spec sheets have turned into an arms race. Suction figures climb every year, obstacle avoidance gets a new acronym every generation, and base stations grow a longer list of things they do automatically. Very little of it is explained in terms of what actually changes when the machine is running around your flat at 9am.

      Here are the specifications that genuinely affect daily use, with PRISM+'s three NanoBot models as reference points.

      What's the Difference Between IR, Line Laser and AI Camera Obstacle Avoidance?

      Almost every robot vacuum worth buying now uses LiDAR to map your home, so mapping isn't the differentiator. Spotting what's in the room is a separate job, solved three ways:

      • Infrared detects that something is in the way and steers around it. Reliable for walls and furniture, but it can't tell what the object is.

      • Line lasers project a laser ahead of the robot and read the distortion to judge an obstacle's shape and height. Much better with small objects.

      • Camera recognition identifies objects, so it can tell a cable from a chair leg from a shoe and route around each differently.

      The NanoBot uses infrared, the NanoBot Pro uses a line laser, and the NanoBot Elite AI combines dual line lasers with camera recognition.

      How much it matters comes down to your floors. If they're usually clear, infrared copes fine. Add charging cables, toys, pet bowls and bags, and better detection is the difference between a clean floor and a robot stuck in a corner with a cable around its brush.

      Does Pa Suction Actually Matter?

      Less than the numbers suggest. Pascals measure air pressure, and a quoted peak figure is taken at maximum motor output in controlled conditions, not how the machine runs on a normal cycle. Real pickup depends just as much on brush design and how well the base plate seals against the floor, which is why two machines with identical Pa ratings can perform differently.

      Across the PRISM+ NanoBot range, the figures are 13,000Pa, 15,000Pa and 18,000Pa. On sealed hard floors the gap is smaller than it looks. On rugs, or with pets or long hair in the house, it's real, because debris sits below the surface of the pile and hair needs more force to lift.

      If your home is all hard floors with no pets, 13,000Pa handles it. Rugs, a shedding pet or long hair are the reasons to step up.

      What Is Obstacle Climbing, and Why Does It Matter?

      This gets no marketing attention and affects daily use more than suction does.

      Singapore homes are full of small vertical steps: bathroom thresholds, balcony door lips, rug edges, the strip between tile and parquet. If the robot can't climb them, part of your flat is off-limits.

      Across the PRISM+ NanoBot range, the climbing height is 18mm, 20mm and 25mm. That sounds trivial, and with flush floors throughout it is. With a raised bathroom threshold or a thick living room rug, those millimetres decide whether the room gets cleaned at all. 

      How Do Robot Vacuum Mop Pads Get Cleaned?

      The most overlooked specification here, and the one our climate makes matter. A pad rinsed in cold water or wrung out by hand and left damp will start to smell. Manufacturers across the category name a damp pad in a humid environment as the leading cause of a musty robot mop.

      Not every home needs the most powerful robot vacuum. The right choice depends on your floor type, how much clutter you have, and how much hands-off cleaning you want.

      Have mostly hard floors, a relatively clear home and no pets? The entry-level Nanobot covers the essentials without taking up much space.
