Is Extended Warranty Worth It? What Singapore Homeowners Should Know
Most standard warranties end after 2 to 3 years. Your fridge, washer or TV will likely be with you much longer.
That gap is where things get expensive. The fridge stops cooling in year four, or the washer won't drain in year five, and suddenly you're choosing between a costly repair and a brand-new unit.
That moment is exactly what extended warranty is for. But between the fine print, the "what's the catch?" doubts and the stories of rejected claims, it's hard to know if it's worth it. This guide breaks it down plainly, so you can decide for yourself.
What is extended warranty?
Extended warranty keeps your product's warranty going after the standard one ends. If a part fails because of a defect or normal wear in use, it gets fixed without you paying for parts and labour.
Every appliance you buy comes with a standard warranty from the brand. It typically lasts 1 to 3 years, depending on the product. After that, any repair is on you.
There are two kinds of extended warranty out there:
- Brand extended warranty: sold by the company that made your product. The same people who built it are the ones who fix it.
- Third-party protection plans: sold by retailers or insurers. Coverage, claim process and exclusions can be quite different from the standard warranty you already have.
The difference matters. With a brand plan, you usually know exactly who to call. With a third-party plan, it's worth checking who actually does the repair and what the claim process looks like.
What does extended warranty cover?
Extended warranty covers things that go wrong with the product itself. It doesn't cover things that happen to the product. Here's how that looks for a PRISM+ extended warranty:
| What happened | Covered? |
|---|---|
| Manufacturing defects | Yes |
| Hardware failure under normal use | Yes |
| Electrical or mechanical faults not caused by external factors | Yes |
| Technical support and repair service | Yes |
| Replacement | Yes, if beyond economical repair: a new like-for-like product, or one of equal or similar functionality |
| Accidental damage (drops, knocks) | No |
| Physical damage (dents, cracks, scratches) | No |
| Liquid damage | No |
| Misuse, negligence or improper installation | No |
| Power surges, lightning or other external factors | No |
| Cosmetic wear and tear | No |
| Consumables and accessories (e.g. filters, brushes, batteries) | No, unless stated |
| Repairs or modifications by unauthorised parties | No |
In short: if your fridge stops cooling, your washer won't drain or your TV won't power on, that's what extended warranty is for. If your TV gets knocked off the console, that's accidental damage, and it's a different kind of cover.
All claims are inspected and assessed by PRISM+ before repair.
Some plans, such as those for fridges, washers, dryers and TVs, cover repairs up to a set total value based on what you paid for the product. Once your total repairs reach that limit, the plan ends. The exact limit depends on the product and plan you choose, so check the individual product page for full details.
Do you actually need extended warranty?
The easiest way to answer this: think about why you're buying in the first place.
If you're replacing something that broke. Ask yourself what went wrong with the old one. Did it stop cooling? Stop spinning? Refuse to drain? If it was a mechanical or electrical fault, extended warranty would likely have covered the repair. You might not be shopping for a replacement right now.
If it's a new purchase. Consider how long you plan to keep it. Fridges and washing machines in Singapore homes often run for 8 years or more, but most standard warranties end at 2 years. That leaves a long stretch where every repair comes out of your pocket.
Extended warranty tends to make the most sense if:
- The product runs every day, like a fridge or washer
- A breakdown would disrupt your household (no fridge for a week is no joke)
- You'd rather pay a known amount now than an unknown repair bill later
- You plan to keep the product for many years
It makes less sense if you upgrade often, or if you're mainly worried about accidents and drops. Extended warranty doesn't cover those.
What to look for before you buy a plan
The most common reason people skip extended warranty isn't "it won't break". It's "these plans are designed not to pay out". That worry is fair, so here's what to check.
1. Is it the same cover you already have? The simplest plans just continue your standard warranty for longer. Same rules, no new clauses to learn. If a plan introduces a whole new policy document, read it carefully.
2. What happens on a second claim? This is where many plans fall short. A customer once told us about a fridge they bought from another brand, with that brand's warranty plan. A part failed and the plan replaced it, no issue. A year later, the same part failed again. This time, the claim was rejected, because the part had already been changed and the replacement wasn't covered.
Ask directly: if a repaired part fails again, is it still covered?
3. Are there extra charges when you claim? Check for labour, transport or call-out fees. Some plans cover parts only.
4. Who does the repair? A brand plan usually means the brand's own technicians and genuine parts. Third-party plans may route you through a separate service provider.
5. What's the coverage limit? Most plans cap total repair costs, often at the product's purchase price. Know your limit up front so there are no surprises.
6. When can you buy it? Some plans must be bought on the day. Others give you a window after delivery, sometimes with a waiting period before you can claim.
How PRISM+ extended warranty works
Same warranty, just longer. PRISM+ extended warranty is the same type of coverage* as the standard warranty your product already comes with.
We don't look for loopholes. We'd rather your fridge keeps working for years than find a reason to say no. A plan that only looks good until you try to claim isn't one that we want to sell.
You asked for it. Extended warranty used to be available on only some PRISM+ products. Customers who had it on one product kept asking for it on the rest, so we expanded it across the range.

Good to know
- Coverage limits: Some plans cover repairs up to a set total value, depending on the product and plan.
- Replacement: If your product is assessed as beyond economical repair, we replace it. For fridges, washers, dryers and TVs, you get a new like-for-like product, within your coverage limit. For laundry racks, robot vacuums and smart locks, you get a replacement of equal or similar functionality, including if your model is no longer made. Your plan ends once the replacement is issued.
- Category-specific terms: Some categories have their own rules, such as which parts it covers or repair value limits.
*Full terms for each plan are on the individual product page. Please consult individual product page and listings to understand the full terms before purchasing.
